Based on a blessing Kimberly received from
Blackfoot Elder Horace Gladstone "Makoyiitsikin",
(On The Trail of the Buffalo), this powerful
presentation relates the present day challenges
and struggles of young people trying to find
their way, to the journeys that young First
Nations peoples historically took as a right
of passage. In this presentation Kimberly shares
stories of her personal wins and losses, triumphs
and heartaches, and lessons learned about self-confidence,
courage, community service, and the power to
make a difference.
Suffering from low self esteem and a belief
that she was "fat and ugly", Kimberly
yearned to stand out, to be special, to make
her mark on the world. Kimberly came from a
broken home with its own set of challenges -
a place she felt alone, misunderstood and lost.
She started to find her way through volunteering,
and experienced a major turning point when she
was chosen to represent Canada on a youth exchange
following high school. Following that, Kimberly
began working with youth from around the world
teaching leadership development, and discovered
the leader within herself. With the support
of mentors who challenged her to live to her
potential, Kimberly took responsibility for
her life and made many dreams come true. Kimberly's
message is one of empowerment that encourages
her audience to live the journey of life fully,
and understand that each person has a trail
they were born to take.
*While this presentation was developed for
youth, Kimberly has found that it is also great
inspiration for teachers, administrators, parents
and other community leaders. Many people have
stated that after hearing this presentation,
she has permanently changed their lives. There
are not many people who do not identify with
at least a portion of her story, and she welcomes
people of all ages and from all walks of life
to experience this presentation.
